Product and innovation: High transparency and close cooperation with our customers
EPD’s (Environmental Product Declarations) are available for all our products. This document the specific emissions of each product. An EPD is a standardised environmental declaration that allow for like for like comparison of the company’s environmental impact from the production of one ton of aggregate. This includes the CO2 and other emissions.
The calculations include - in accordance with EPD standard EN 15804 - the emissions of the entire process from the production of the explosives to the readiness of the products for sale. The EPD's for the Norwegian quarries are externally verified and published at EPD-Norge.no. The respective link can be found here:
To allow us to calculate the impact of the full value chain, including vessels, terminals and onwards transport (where applicable), we have developed an Excel tool together with Institute for Environmental Informatics in Hamburg (IFU). This program calculates the corresponding environmental indicators on the basis of EPD standard 15804.
We also developed a wider calculation model for the Dutch MKI (Milieu Cost Indicator). This has been externally verified for the Dutch market calculating the environmental impact as a cost in EUR/per ton.
Our CO2 are included in the Heidelberg Materials Group sustainability reporting.
Please make contact if you require further information on any of the issues above.
Research & Technology
The company has set work groups dedicated to optimising our production processes, quality and environmental impact. For example, we have been able to improve the quality control with the first world's only fully automated robot laboratory. This innovative design reduces the need for heavy manual labour and greatly improves employee welfare.
The laboratory can map the entire daily quality process automatically, 24/7. Testing is carried out in accordance with EN 933-1, up to a maximum grain size of 32mm. Automation enables us to achieve a high level of precision in the testing process. Automation also prevents repetitive strain injuries to our employees.
For testing the particle size distribution of offshore sizes, we have a specially developed sampling device with an integrated sieving system (referred to as the "Giraffe"). This allows the material to run directly from the belt into a hopper over screens for sampling.
